The house on the corner, in simple Karoo style

It is possible that this house was already built in the 1860’s. The first owners were the Irish couple, Edward and Catherine Gully. He was a harness maker. After Catherine’s death on 3 November 1874, her oldest daughter, Mary, who was married to Frederick Riehl, took possession of the house. She lived there until her death in 1934.

The house was built with clay bricks in a simple “Karoo” style. The walls were plastered. In the attic are signs of the original thatched roof. Unfortunately the additions were done rather insensitively with modern steel framed windows.

As with many of the old houses, it seems that the front verandah was added later.

As far as it is known the house has always been used as a residence until the 1990’s.
