Across the street is Gottland House. This ostrich feather palace, typical of the Victorian period was designed by Charles Bullock for a local attorney, Mr C. M. Lind. As a prominent member of society, he played an important role in the local military, as a leader of the Oudtshoorn Volunteer Rifles. This house was one of many erected during the second boom period, 1902 – 1914 and reflects the ostentatious lifestyle lead by the town’s people.
Charles Bullock provided his clients with catalogues from which they were able to choose cast iron embellishments, fancy fireplaces, pressed ceilings and stained-glass windows in the Art Nouveau style. A characteristic of Bullock’s designs is his fanciful turrets, barge boards and verandahs. Except for the local sandstone and clay bricks, everything was imported from Europe, shipped to Mossel Bay and then transported by ox-wagon to Oudtshoorn.
Today this beautiful residence is home to senior citizens and is owned by the welfare society, die Afrikaanse Christelike Vroue Vereniging (ACVV).
