From the heritage walk's own records for this marker
157 – 159 High Street forms a delightful street scape with its two neighbours. All three properties were developed during the Feather Boom era (1880 to 1914) when the town experienced unprecedented wealth and prosperity. This area was much sought after by prosperous shop keepers and professionals because of its proximity to schools, churches and shops.
The newly created middle class families were for the first time able to afford their own homes. Speculators were keen to tap into this market and many semi-detached houses were built. Today many of these former residential homes have been rezoned to accommodate businesses and this has contributed to the changing face of the area.
