Leuner Residence

This prominent sandstone residence dating from the late-1800’s, was later endowed with an elegant verandah and interesting portico bearing the coat-of-arms of the Leuner family. With the improved economy due to the First Ostrich Feather Boom in 1880, the stone-masons who had been imported from Scotland to build government buildings and churches were employed in the construction of sandstone residences. Many of these fairly modest homes were later enlarged and refurbished with the continued prosperity of the Second Ostrich Feather Boom which lasted until 1914.

153 High Street also has extensive sandstone boundary walls which, sadly, now show the ravages of time and moisture. Today the property has been sensitively subdivided into several small apartments and forms part of an interesting street-scape of sandstone houses on High Street.
